OSCAR PETERSON'S 'THE AFRICA SUITE'
FEATURING THE CLAYTON-HAMILTON JAZZ ORCHESTRA
W/ KENNY BARRON, GERALD CLAYTON,
BENNY GREEN & RUSSELL MALONE
As a part of this June's 41st San Francisco Jazz Festival and piano legend Oscar Peterson's upcoming centennial, SFJAZZ will present the U.S. premiere of Peterson's previously unperformed The Africa Suite along with a full performance of his 1964 Canadiana Suite and a selection of other notable Peterson compositions.
This exclusive all-star concert at Davies Symphony Hall will include Berkeley-raised pianist and Oscar Peterson protégé Benny Green, 2010 NEA Jazz Master and SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director Kenny Barron, masterful pianist Gerald Clayton, guitarist Russell Malone, and the GRAMMY-nominated Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, co-led by bassist John Clayton and drummer Jeff Hamilton.
Arranged for this concert by John Clayton, the expansive Africa Suite was composed in 1979 and was never recorded or performed in its entirety during Peterson's lifetime, with only "Nigerian Marketplace" and "Peace for South Africa" appearing on live albums in the 1980s.
Do not miss the historic U.S. premiere of this unheard masterwork that will also be the first and only time that both The Africa Suite and the Canadiana Suite will be performed during the same concert.
