Four Barrel Coffee is pleased to present 'Ordinary People' by Emily McPeek. A recent MFA graduate from the San Francisco Art Institute, Emily McPeek brings a body of work that stems from her childhood interest in storytelling. Emily explores, filters, and recreates her surroundings in an often comical way, focusing on the people in her stories through illustration and caricatures. These paintings are larger-than-life absurd narratives of local existence, with hyperbolic tendencies that are more revealing than fantastical. As the artist confronts herself and her own perceptions, these paintings confront the viewer through size, density, and strangeness, and acknowledge the nature of our internal dialogues in relation to local existence.
Emily McPeek was born in Nashville, Tennessee and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Southern California. During her studies there she was awarded first place in “Arts In Action: Momentum” sponsored by Volkswagen. The winning painting, “Women Praying” (included in 'Ordinary People') was displayed in the Smithsonian in Washington D.C., and the Kennedy Center later requested two more of her paintings to show in the State Russian Museum. McPeek also gained valuable experience working as a teacher’s assistant and as an artist’s assistant during her studies at USC and at SFAI. She currently lives and paints in San Jose and exhibits regularly in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Join us on Friday, December 14th from 6-8pm for the opening reception for 'Ordinary People'. Drinks will be served and the artist will be in attendance. The exhibition runs through January 29, 2019.
