NYC-based chamber pop collective Oracle Hysterical appears May 13, 2017 at Starline Social Club (645 W. Grand, Oakland).
"Admirers of Joanna Newsom and Shara Nova will find plenty to savor...." -- Steve Smith
"Music often takes inspiration from classic literature, but the remarkable ensemble
Oracle Hysterical makes it their raison d’etre." -- Chicago Reader
Oracle Hysterical is a chamber pop collective of four composer-performers: Majel Connery, Elliot Cole and Doug and Brad Balliett. Half band, half book club, Oracle Hysterical combines eclectic musical influences, with literary breadth, adapting great works of literature through the medium of song. The group's classical instrumentation and lush arrangements anchor influences ranging from John Blow, to the Beatles, and My Brightest Diamond. On May 13, led by conductor Stephen Prutsman, the NYC-based group partners with a handpicked, 10-piece local ensemble to unveil a trio of artful, rock-infused works based on texts by Suetonius (a seedy "Cleopatra cantata"), an Afghani folk tale (the chaste "Babinigar") and a bassoon "multiphonics" concerto.
