First Amendment Gallery is proud to present “The End Is Near”, a group exhibition featuring Robert Bowen, Vyal One, and Lango Oliveira. Join us for the opening reception Thursday, March 19th, 2016, from 6:30-9:30PM, the event is free and open to the public.
“The End Is Near” offers the self-taught artists’ insight into a post-apocalyptic world. Their uniquely creative acuity reveals a misunderstood beauty in the ‘destruction’ of our society, a beauty in the dawn of darkness. With this brief vision of another world, California artists Vyal, Robert, and Lango create a wildly saturated, dynamic body of work all in their signature styles with visible roots in graffiti. The body of work is unsettling, intriguing, and ultimately enchanting--not quite like a dream, nor a nightmare.
Navigating the unknown with his animal-machinery hybrids, Robert Bowen has fantasized a collection of contradictory creatures. His hybrids have migrated from a world where technology and Mother Nature intertwine, rather than coincide. Their existence proves innovation and evolution will no longer be separate entities, with hyper-realist portrayal of nature’s kingdom in with unsettling mechanical ‘upgrades’.
Literally foreseeing “The End Is Near”, Vyal One spiritually references the occult with his signature recurring eye. Traditionally a symbol of ill will, the eye of the occult is often ambiguously misunderstood. Left to one’s discretion it can be used to abet or protect from negative energy. His vibrant rendering of an ‘all-knowing’ eye seems to provide visceral guidance in uncertainty.
Lango Oliveira fastens dynamic scenes from mythology with writhing, emotional figures opposing fantastical beasts. Using rich hues he creates an ominous representation of the human experience--a sort of hellish dance pending an ultimate demise. His juxtaposition of old world imagery within this new reality is sinister, yet comforting.
“The End Is Near” will be on display until April 14th, 2016. For inquiries or catalog requests contact
