ARTISTS : Ben Bigelow, Matt Smith Chavez, Julia Goodman, Veronica Graham, Nyeema Morgan, Boris Scherbakov, Lucy van Limburg Stirum

Kala Art Institute is pleased to announce, Belewe, the latest off-site exhibition at Berkeley Central Arts Passage. Join us for the Opening Reception on Wednesday, May 21, 6-8pm. Derived from the folk etymology of the phrase blue moon, belewe roughly translates: “to betray.” The works in the exhibition evoke trickery, translation, moon cycles, and mysticism. Did you know that a blue moon isn’t blue?

Ben Bigelow’s site-specific, large-scale transparency pranks the viewer. Matt Smith Chavez’s unbound paintings speak in tongues calling on histories of textiles, Abstract Expressionism, graphic design, and emo-text messaging. Julia Goodman presents a handmade-paper calendar memorializing her father’s passing. Veronica Graham’s screenprinted tapestry, prints, and comics provide an onslaught of pattern and color measured by social narrative. Nyeema Morgan’s multimedia installation is part of her ongoing series I, Rhinoceros that ruptures the formal and structural gravitas of artifacts. Boris Scherbakov’s moonscapes printed on traditional Japanese paper blur the recognizable beacon of the moon into abstract meditations. Boris also presents work made in the theme by Lucy van Limburg Stirum.

In it’s second year, Kala’s Off-Site Exhibitions feature artworks from Berkeley-based artists and the Kala community. Working together in the vibrant downtown Berkeley Arts District, Berkeley Central Arts Passage and Kala Art Institute are forging new connections between artists and audience.
