SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA — Family Affair, a gallery and atelier focused on the art, design, photography, and ephemera of music, cordially invites you to its first show of 2019 sharing a personal glimpse of the prolific producer, composer, artist, innovator, and musical genius from Detroit JAMES DEWITT YANCEY, also known as JAY DEE, and best known as J DILLA.
Taken from 1997 to 1999, A Day in the Life of JOHN DOE is a collection of never-before-seen and rare photos of J Dilla by WAAJEED, a multi-talented music producer, filmmaker, artist, and Detroit native. Sharing a fantastic moment of history in his 17-year friendship with James, whose signature production and influential instrumentals initially were credited under the pseudonym “John Doe,” Waajeed captures the creative process of an artist known for his uncanny musical ability to hear and compose sonic collages with an open mind toward discovering and sampling all genres of music while imbuing the drum machine with a human touch and signature swing. These are images that capture an intimate portrait of the man behind the myth, an artist whose life and work were one through the love of music behind the scenes — searching for the perfect sample in a local record store to creating powerful pieces of music with emotional content in his home basement. This is before making the name “J DILLA."
BLING47 BREAKS Dilla Edition, a video series directed and produced by Waajeed uncovering the records sampled by J Dilla and featuring DJs and producers devoted to Dilla’s legacy, will be on view at the gallery.
