Ánimecheri Kéjtsïtakua: Ofrendas para las animas (Offerings for the souls) originates from the Purepecha community where each person offers something to honor their dead in a ritual during late October to early November. These offerings are in the forms of candles, flowers, breads, fruits, papel picado, altars, music, and processions. It is believed that these offerings guide the souls into the spaces created by the members of their community by remembering what these souls did in life and what they liked. It follows a natural calendar that is directly connected to the environment, and animas (souls) can also be invoked from the four elements.
MCCLA encourages artists to participate in our Day of the Dead 2016 by exploring concepts of animism. For example, an altar or installation could be created to remember La Llorona who reminds us of the element of water, an offering that remembers a loved one that has passed, or a recent event of people dying in the hands of police. MCCLA accepts traditional altars, contemporary installations, paintings, film, new media, photography, written work/poetry, and music.
