Emily Dickinson - In Her Own Words - Exclusive Solo Performance by Chetana Karel-Michaan, America's Leading Theatrical Interpreter of Emily
Subterranean Shakespeare Presents:
"Old-fashioned, naughty, everything!" A Glimpse of Emily Dickinson, based entirely on Emily's poems and letters, starring Chetana Karel-Michaan. Directed by Andrea Adler. Co-written by Andrea Adler and Chetana Karel-Michaan. Music by Dale Zola.
Shakespearean actress Chetana Karel-Michaan, America's leading theatrical interpreter of Emily Dickinson, will bring her solo performance of Emily, the most important American poet of the 19th century, for one night only to the Berkeley City Club, on Saturday, January 11, 2020, at 7:00 p.m.
Emily Dickinson, the famously reclusive poet, was extremely prolific, with most of her poems and letters published posthumously. Her poetry is now considered among the finest in the English language, and Emily Dickinson is now understood to be a serious artist whose intellectual curiosity and emotional intensity are expressed in her concise and compelling poems that capture a range of human experiences.
Karel-Michaan interprets Emily with a deep empathy for the poet's intelligence and overarching spirituality, transforming the nearly bare stage into an intimate space, bringing to vibrant life Emily's poems and letters.
Karel-Michaan says, "Emily has been my inspiration and my guide for many years. She touches my heart as Shakespeare does, and I live by her words: 'My business is to love,' and, 'We turn not older with years, but newer every day.'"
Karel-Michaan recently brought her one-woman Emily Dickinson "Old-Fashioned, Naughty, Everything!" production to San Francisco's Marsh Theater, lighting up the stage for a sold-out audience.
An AEA-SAG/AFTRA member, Karel-Michaan has an extensive theatrical resume. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Dramatic Art from the University of California, Berkeley, and trained at the British American Drama Academy at Oxford in 1987. Karel-Michaan toured throughout America as a member of The New Shakespeare Company of San Francisco, founded, directed and produced by Margrit Roma and Clarence Ricklefs, playing such roles as Ophelia in Hamlet, Hermia in A Midsummer Night's Dream and Miranda in The Tempest, and she appeared with The Emeryville Shakespeare Company (later named CalShakes) as Titania in A Midsummer Night's Dream in John Hinkle Park. Karel-Michaan appeared with The Subterranean Shakespeare Company as Marinya in Uncle Vanya, Alonza, Queen of Naples in The Tempest and Sara in 'Mimzabim' by John O'Keefe. She is a founding member, and performer, of Dan and Dale Zola's The Great Night of Rumi and The Great Night of Soul Poetry. She appeared as Ana, in the Clean House, with Island Stage Left in Friday Harbor, Washington, and as Ouiser Boudreaux, in Steel Magnolias at Willows Theatre Company. She played Yente, in Fiddler on the Roof, with San Anselmo Town Players, Anna Petrovna in Chekov's Platonov, with the Berkeley Actor's Workshop, Lucy, in The Recruiting Officer, at the Undercroft Theatre, New York City, among many other roles.
