Join fellow ocean-lovers for a beach clean-up at Ocean Beach in San Francisco on Saturday, June 29th. We will meet near the café at the end of the Muni N/Judah line (1396 La Playa St.)
About this EventWhales, other marine wildlife, and humans are all threatened by plastics, especially micro-plastics (very small pieces of plastics in our oceans) that enter the food chain. These micro-plastics come from consumer products we use in our daily lives, such as to-go packaging, single-use water bottles, and plastic bags. One of the best ways to help our local environment is to participate in a beach clean-up.
As part of Oceanic Society's Blue Habits program, we are hosting a beach cleanup at Ocean Beach on Saturday, June 29th at 9:00 AM. While we'll be collecting all trash found, we also have specialized equipment to sift for micro-plastics at the high-tide line. A trained wildlife biologist from the Oceanic Society will speak about the effects of micro-plastics on the environment and document the work of the volunteers.
We will provide all collection materials, just bring thick gloves and dress for windy, cool weather (windbreaker and long pants). Bring some sunscreen and a hat, and come ready to get your hands dirty in service of our local beach environment!
Also everyone will receive a free Oceanic Society t-shirt for participating in the cleanup!
Oceanic Society was founded in San Francisco in 1969 and is America's first non-profit organization devoted to marine conservation. Oceanic Society's mission is to deepen the connections between people and nature, and works all over the world to conserve marine wildlife and move people to action.
