Among the vanguard of the exploding British jazz scene, London-based tenor saxophonist Nubya Garcia brings elements from her Caribbean heritage into her sophisticated au courant approach, mixing spiritual, afro-futurist jazz with hip-hop rhythms and global influences.
The product of a musical household in Camden Town, Garcia began on saxophone at 10, studying at the Royal Academy of Music and eventually receiving a summer study scholarship to Berklee in Boston before graduating with honors from London's Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance.
She is a recipient of the Steve Reid InNOVAtion Award (named for the visionary drummer), and appears on five of the nine tracks on influential BBC DJ Gilles Peterson's Brownswood Recordings compilation We Out Here, a landmark chronicle of the artists making up London's emergent jazz community. Garcia released her debut EP, NUBYA's 5IVE in 2017 and the follow-up, 2018's When We Are, and regularly collaborates with Sons of Kemet tubist Theon Cross, drummers Makaya McCraven and Moses Boyd, and the collective septet NÉRIJA. She won the Jazz FM Breakthrough Act of the Year Award and the Sky Arts Breakthrough Act of the Year Award in 2018, and the Jazz FM UK Jazz Act of the Year Award in 2019.
