The Noe Valley Chamber Music series (soon to be rebranded "Noe Music") is building a community of music lovers and supporting artists who are hit hard by COVID-19 through the all-new online Noe Music Listening Club.
"Our Listening Clubs began a couple of years ago with a couple dozen people gathering in a living room, listening to great chamber music, learning, engaging, and discovering new insights with the guidance of star musicologist, Kai Christiansen," says co-artistic director Meena Bhasin. "Now, we've found that people are thirsting for that same connection to each other and to music, so we took the Listening Club online and have been moved at how meaningful it has been for people."
The Noe Music Listening Club takes place every other Thursday at 7pm PT and is a digital and interactive deep listening experience. Conducted live on Zoom and featuring high-quality live-streaming radio, each session is led by a guest artist and delves into a specific musical topic. "It could be anything from guided listening of their favorite recordings to a deep dive into a particular musical genre that is meaningful to them," says co-artistic director Owen Dalby. The host shares personal insights, prompts our listening, and then plays excerpts or entire works for the audience to enjoy. A lively discussion ensues, in the chat function, or in breakout rooms, and at other times in the main conversation itself.
The first three months will engage both Bay Area artists as well as artists from across the globe. Each episode seeks to achieve three goals: give artists a platform to share their creativity and to highlight their own music or that of other artists that are important to them, provide deeply moving and educational experiences for our audiences, and nurture a community where much-needed interpersonal connections can take place.
Schedule:
April 23rd, 7pm - Grammy award nominee, tenor Nicholas Phan and guest musicologist Kai Christiansen on the music of Lili Boulanger
May 7th, 7pm - Celebrated American composer and San Francisco local, Jake Heggie ("It's a Wonderful Life", "Dead Man Walking", "Moby Dick")
May 21st, 7pm - Two-time Oscar nominee and Emmy award-winning composer Nick Britell ("Moonlight", "If Beale Street Could Talk", "Succession")
