PERFORMER BIOS

Richard Loranger is a writer, performer, musician, visual artist, and all-around squeaky wheel, currently residing in Oakland, CA. He is the founder of Poetea, a monthly literary conversation group. His recent book of flash prose, Sudden Windows (Zeitgeist Press, 2016), has been warmly received. He is also the author of the Poems for Teeth, The Orange Book, and nine chapbooks, and has work in over 100 magazines and journals. He co-curates the series Babar in Exile with poet Paul Corman-Roberts, and is debuting a new queer talk series, #we, in November, 2018. You can find more about his work and scandals at https://www.richardloranger.com.

Born in San Francisco, Tongo Eisen-Martin is the author of someone’s dead already (Bootstrap Press, 2015) and Heaven Is All Goodbyes (City Lights Books, Pocket Poets Series, 2017). He is a movement worker, educator, and poet who has organized against mass incarceration and extra-judicial killing of Black people throughout the United States. Subscribing to the Freirian model of education, he designed curricula for oppressed people's education projects from San Francisco to South Africa. His latest curriculum on extrajudicial killing of Black people, We Charge Genocide Again, has been used as an educational and organizing tool throughout the country. He uses his craft to create liberated territory wherever he performs and teaches. He recently lived and organized around issues of human rights and self-determination in Jackson, MS. Eisen-Martin was The Poetry Center's premier Mazza Writer in Residence in 2017.

Formed by renowned poet Royal Kent and ASCAP Award-winning composer Wendy Loomis, COPUS is a spoken word jazz ensemble that presents conscious lyrics intertwined with beautiful melodies and powerful rhythms. COPUS – an acronym for Creation Of Peace Under Stars – has a faithful following by discerning listeners. A wide variety of talented musicians have performed with COPUS; the current instrumentation includes bass (Patrick Mahon), drums (Levon Washington), percussion (Don Holloway), spoken word (Royal Kent) and piano (Wendy Loomis). COPUS has performed at festivals, clubs, and theaters in the San Francisco Bay Area, New York, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Nashville, Atlanta, and Boston.

Last week COPUS song “Stick It All In My Shoe” was nominated for ‘best jazz song’ by the Hollywood Music in Media Awards. COPUS recently released the single “We All Bleed Red (Steady for Justice)”. Produced by New York-based GRAMMY nominee Yaron Fuchs, the piece has been receiving great reviews and was considered in the ‘best rap song’ category in the GRAMMYS 2018. An anthem for our time. "Through ace musicianship and a wild, bright & bold sound, COPUS captures the magic they’re seeking to create on “We All Bleed Red” – it’s like a combination of Quincy Jones meets Baz Luhrmann…theatrical & dramatic in nature with great storytelling, set in an old-school setting that incorporates modern-day movement in the structure and reflecting on the current state of the world lyrically.” http://www.copusmusic.com
