NNSF #100 Field Trip - Science + Painting: Skulls!

SEE EVENT DETAILS
As part of our 100th Nerd Nite SF celebration, we're teaming up with Yost Studio and Dr. Rich Schneider of UCSF for a special science + painting night!
Join us for an evening of skulls, art, and conversation. Chat with a scientist who studies skulls, handle and examine a fantastic array of real skulls, and create your own extraordinary painting based on them.
In this event, professional artist Kathryn Yost will lead you in a step-by-step recreation of a painting featuring a skull. All your supplies (canvas, paints, brushes, and apron) are provided for you. No experience is necessary. At the end of the evening, you can take your creation home!
We'll be joined by Rich Schnieder, who is the Director of the Laboratory for Development and Evolutionary Skeletal Biology at UCSF (and also gave a great talk waaay back at our 49th Nerd Nite!). Throughout the evening you'll get to chat with Rich about his research, and enjoy a short lecture:
The artist Giacometti once said that “life itself is inside the skull.”  More than any other structure, the skulls of animals support the basic functions of life including feeding, breathing, sensing, thinking, and communicating.  What can we learn about the life histories of different animals by examining their skulls?  How do skulls develop in embryos and evolve across species so that they can enable animals to survive in their environments?  We will try to answer these questions by examining the skulls from a diverse array of animals.
We'll have on hand a large range of skulls, including: dog and coyote (puppies and adults), deer, sheep, horse, bull, pig, human, beaver, alligator, chicken, duck, emu, hawk, Gila monster, and possibly more!
