Ninth Planet New Music

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Jack Frerer Spiral Sequences West Coast Premiere
plus more fresh and varied new music from the Bay Area and beyond!

Created in 2019 as a merger of Bay Area new music groups Wild Rumpus and Composers, Inc., Ninth Planet combines the resources of performers and composers of music of our time. Ninth Planet New Music is an organization dedicated to the commissioning, performance and furthering of new music, presenting a rich a wide-ranging repertoire particularly focusing on emerging voices in the field of composition. This program of fresh and varied new music from the Bay Area and beyond will feature the West Coast Premiere of this year's winner of the Ettelson award, composer Jack Frerer's string quartet Spiral Sequences. Of the piece, the composer writes: "The first movement, the shorter of the two, is frantic and pulse-driven, carried by momentum generated by spiraling 16th note patterns and repeated ostinatos. It presents fragments of a sequence-like pattern, one which is played in its complete form at the beginning of a longer, lyrical, and introspective second movement. The first movement presents an inward spiral, constantly tightening. The second works to unravel it." Please join us at Old First Concerts for a memorable evening of new music!
