New Work by Margaret Timbrell Opening Reception

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Opening reception Sept 14, 6pm to 8pm; Exhibition September 11-17, 2017

September 11-17 2017, Pacific Felt Factory will exhibit Margaret Timbrell's new body of work. The opening reception is September 14 from 6pm to 8pm.

The project consists of two groups of work: Auto-Corrected, a series of donated autocorrect fails embroidered onto vintage imagery, and RedWork, a series of traditional redwork embroideries about parenthood. These two series contrast and complement each other in that they are opposites in a bubble of time and interpersonal contact.

For Auto-Corrected, Timbrell solicits autocorrect fail donations. These, in turn, she pairs with the nostalgic vintage stitch kits. Several facets of the autocorrect program, which is now installed on most devices, are incredibly intriguing. It is changing our language and social engagement. Yet it is an imp of an application, creating small daily annoyances, hindering and changing our efforts at communication, and revealing how the tool of technology changes us. Autocorrect perpetuates some surprising cultural biases. These are significant in that the program is both universal and innocuous. In the pairing process, Timbrell highlights the oddness and sometimes prejudice of the word choice substitution.

In contrast, Redwork is a traditional style of decorative embroidery used primarily in domestic needlework - kitchen towels, aprons, etc. Redwork is quite literally red work- all the embroidery thread is red. For this series, Timbrell tracks information collected from her engagement in the world as a parent over an extended period of time and incorporates this very personal data into the time consuming process of stitching.

The installation at Pacific Felt Factory consists of fifteen pieces from Auto-Corrected and three pieces from the RedWork series. Additionally,

***Timbrell will host gallery hours each day from 1pm to 5pm during the run of the show. Visitors will be encouraged to contribute their own autocorrect fails or to join in for a stitch and bitch session.
