In this innovative multimedia production, Music Director Daniel Hope and New Century will take you on a fascinating musical tour of works by Kurt Weill, Bertolt Brecht, Hanns Eisler, and more, while vocalists Thomas Hampson and Horst Maria Merz narrate the action in the dual roles of radio broadcasters and singers. Ring in New Century's 30th Anniversary with an evening of music that celebrates the occasions that bring us closer together. New Century is joined by the San Francisco Girls' Chorus for an opening trio of songs that beckon you out of hibernation and towards the pleasures of life. Daniel Hope performs Mendelssohn's charming D minor Violin Concerto, which dodged obscurity through the collegial advocacy between generations of violinists. The program closes with Haydn's theatrical "La Passione" Symphony, born out of a freewheeling period of intense emotional expression.

As New Century prepares to embark on a 30th anniversary European tour, we invite you to join the orchestra on a series of musical journeys that spark meaningful insights from ideas of the past. Two works explore American's identity as a melting pot, including Jessie Montgomery's Banner, a reimagining of our national anthem, and Nico Muhly's Stranger, a song cycle that reflects on the American immigrant experience, featuring acclaimed tenor Nicholas Phan. Masterful tributes to their predecessors are showcased in two landmark British works from the 20thcentury, Ralph Vaughan Williams's Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis and Benjamin Britten's Variations on a Theme by Frank Bridge. The world premiere of a new co-commissioned work by Hannah Kendall rounds out the program.
