Nancy Nguyen - Spit and Swallow

SEE EVENT DETAILS
This new body of work foregrounds Nguyen's ability to mediate on intrinsic experiences through observing happenings in the natural world. Poetic rendering of fish unravel allegories to studies of rebirth. A connection between body and atmosphere transcends through colorfields and vignettes. Depictions of orifices are autonomous in Nguyen's view of the transient, where forms of light imbue the work with an ambient quality, recalling time of day and temperature. Nguyen's use of oil is illuminated by spontaneity and remembering, channeling ways we are entangled by our biological pursuits, and the virtues of human progression, seeking an inner mantra to recite and commune with.

The paintings are rooted in phenomena from sitting meditation and writing poetry, shaping Nguyen's psyche from an early age. The intercourse with words and paint are similar, referencing a moment that is fragile and present. Birth and death, a concept in Buddhism, is a spiritual home, a reality she constantly returns to. The evolving symbol of the fish reflects ideas of regeneration. Bodies are warped into earthy voids and fleshy hues express feelings of raw carnality.

Oil is imperative in Nguyen's process on canvas, and realizes itself psychologically. Carrying resemblance to water, the mutable quality of oil gives space for contemplation. Each work searches, holding a record, an awareness of land, innate behaviors, or systems of beliefs. The paintings are longing, giving birth to things in disguise, unfolding the spirit and one's remembrance.

Nancy Nguyen (b. 1994 in San Jose, CA) is currently working in San Francisco, CA. The artist received her BFA from San Jose State University. Spit and Swallow at Swim marks Nguyen's first solo exhibition. Recent group exhibitions included An Outlet for the Recluse at Goodmother in Oakland and 20th Anniversary show at Medicine for a Nightmares in San Francisco.
