SEE EVENT DETAILS
photo credit: © Wilfried Laule/Galeria Alaska
DIR: Jochen Hick, Germany, 98 min., 2016
The movie reflects on Germany’s infamous paragraph 175, which made sexual acts between men a criminal offense. The law took effect in 1872 and was only abolished in 1994. Nevertheless in West Berlin - where men were at least allowed to dance with each other - more and more venues opened up and became a refuge for countless gay citizens of the Federal Republic of Germany since the sixties.
In this documentary Jochen Hicks explores the progress of the gay scene from its beginning until now using so far unpublished and oftentimes provocative archival material and interviewing countless witnesses of time.
Jochen Hick is a German film director and producer of mainly independent feature and documentary films specializing in LGBT issues. From 2007 until 2010 Hick served as editor-in-chief, head of program acquisitions and co-programming director of TIMM, the first TV channel for gay male audiences in German speaking countries.
