Oakland based artist Gary-Paul Barbosa Prince brings his firebrand art to Autobody Fine Art. Barbosa Prince works in a mode of revolving series in painting, sculpture, and new media. On display are his most recent works that vacillate from finely well tuned oil paintings to roughly hewn cartoonish imagery that express his Mexican-American background as well as his passion for popular culture.
Barbosa Prince grew up in San Antonio, TX and spent his summers as a child with his grandparents in Muzquiz, Coahuila Mexico. He was one of the first of a small number of artists who took on the topic of the Mexican Drug War early on interpreting the vicious horrors and nightmares that have continued to disrupt Mexico and the US border states.
Although his main focus is on painting and sculpture, he has a several series that utilize new media as well as art activism. His Analog Dialog works are signs made for the homeless that he has been distributing to homeless people in an effort to help boost their source of income from “Sign Flying.” This exhibit is a tour de force from an artist who has been passionately engaged. His work is sensitive and graceful in one vein and unapologetic in another.
