MVFF Music at Sweetwater Music Hall

SEE EVENT DETAILS
In addition to in-person screenings, the California Film Institute is excited to announce the return of MVFF Music in partnership with the historic Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley. Four nights of live music will be companion performances to four highly anticipated MVFF Documentaries: The US Premiere of Chris J. Russo's Lady Buds, the story of six women who came out of the shadows of the cannabis underground to enter the newly legal market; Suzanne Joe Kai's documentary Like a Rolling Stone: The Life & Times of Ben Fong-Torres, an intimate portrait of the Bay Area social activist and legendary Rolling Stone rock critic; The North American Premiere of John Anderson and Bob Sarles' Born in Chicago, a loving tribute to the Blues narrated by Dan Aykroyd; and the World Premiere of Andres Alegria and Abel Sanchez's Song for Cesar, showcasing the music of the Chicano Movement of the 1960s. Sweetwater Music Hall is especially proud to be hosting these performances as the iconic venue just recently reopened its doors in September, 2021 due to closures affected by the pandemic. Sweetwater Music Hall is known for making music history on its stage and hosting these four films with companion performances in partnership with the MVFF adds to the ongoing luster of the Hall.

Saturday, October 9
The Mill Valley Film Festival presents Monophonics in a live musical concert celebrating the documentary film LADY BUDS directed by award-winning filmmaker Chris J. Russo, which will have its US Premiere at MVFF the same evening. Raised amid the rich musical culture and history of the San Francisco Bay Area, Monophonics proudly carry the torch through the generations into today's musical landscape. Holding on to tradition, but by no means purists of any kind, they play their own brand of music known as "Psychedelic Soul." Touching on Northern soul, doo-wop, rock and roll, Psych pop, and cinematic music, Monophonics show off their diversity while remaining true to their roots. Overall, it's heartfelt music and old-school vibes, without losing sight of the present. This is music steeped in that timeless feeling when people could write and produce songs that you could listen to repeatedly.

Benefit Performance
Friday, October 15
Abel Sanchez & Teatro Campesino
In honor of the Mill Valley Film Festival's world premiere screening of the documentary Song For Cesar, an all-star group of extraordinary VIP guest musicians featured in this riveting documentary will perform an exceptional one-time Latin fueled rock concert live at the Sweetwater Music Hall. Entitled: "BRINGING FORTH SONG AND CELEBRATION OF LIFE," group leader Abel Sanchez and eight of the Song For Cesar project musicians will perform music from the movie and more. The music is drawn from the original 2004 vision that inspired Abel (an original Fantasy Records label mate of CCR) and Jorge Santana (founder and guitarist of the band Malo) to write the lyrics and the music to "Song for Cesar'' as a tribute to the legacy of Cesar Chavez, the farmworker movement, the United Farm Workers Union, and most of all the farmworkers and their families. Fans of San Francisco's early 1970's energetic Latin-soul-rock-powered music are going to be enthralled by tonight's music. The show is especially poignant and exciting as it will also be a celebration in honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month.
