Lionel Yu, known as MusicalBasics on YouTube, is a pianist and composer based in Washington DC, with a flair for reinventing timeless classics such as Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata with a modern, electronic twist. His recent performance at the world-famous Kennedy Center in Washington DC, has garnered 3+ million views on YouTube.
Born in Hangzhou, China, Yu grew up in the United States, attending NYU and having studied at Juilliard School of Music and Peabody Preparatory in Baltimore. He worked as a financial analyst for 8 years in NYC before becoming a full-time pianist in 2019, performing his debut solo recital at Carnegie Hall.
In the past two years, Yu's piano art project, MusicalBasics, has garnered over 1 million Youtube subscribers and nearly 100,000 listeners on Spotify. His fanbase extends globally and demand for his performance is rising: his recent March concert at Kennedy Center's Terrace Theater was sold out, following his sold-out October 2021 concert at the Europaische Hof in Heidelberg.
In addition to "Electronic Remixes" of famous classical pieces, Yu also writes his own original modern classical music for chamber music, particularly for the piano trio and violin/cello. He also creates numerous videos on Youtube showing behind-the-scenes for his compositions, many of which have been viewed millions of times.
Yu also collaborates regularly with his fans who are student composers in high school and college. His video series, "Playing My Fans Pieces" has also garnered millions of views on Youtube, helping to expose these young composers to thousands of new subscribers.
