Music Illuminated is MITV's signature series that goes beyond the notes on the page. Imagine a fireside chat-style conversation with Artistic Director Michael Adams, where you're not just listening to a performance-you're uncovering the stories behind classical music. At this event, Michael and the Pavone Quartet explore Beethoven's string quartet Op. 74 - its drama, success, and the origin of its nickname.
Beethoven's string quartet Op. 74 was written against a backdrop of tremendous drama and upheaval in his personal life, all while Vienna was under siege by Napoleon, forcing Beethoven to hunker down in a basement to avoid the shelling. Responding to criticism of his three previous quartets, Beethoven set out to win back supporters by making the quartet Op. 74 as 'likeable' as possible. Through stories and performance, Artistic Director Michael Adams and the Pavone Quartet will illustrate why this quartet was an immediate success - and why it's nicknamed "Harp".
