Celebrate spring with the grandeur of Mozart’s choral art, as the San Francisco City Chorus presents the Grand Mass in C minor, K. 427. Drawing on his recent study of Händel and Bach, this work integrates Baroque pomp with Mozart’s own inimitable elegance and clarity throughout its soaring solo and ensemble passages and stirring choruses.
Composition began in 1782, likely in celebration of Mozart’s marriage to Constanze Weber that same year. Indeed, Constanze herself was one of the soprano soloists at the 1783 premiere. Some mystery surrounds the work, as it was still unfinished at the time of the premiere—and remained so at the time of Mozart’s death in 1791—for unknown reasons. Although we can only speculate on those circumstances, there is no mystery about its enduring greatness. We invite you to experience it with us!
The concert, directed by Larry Marietta and accompanied by organist John R.S. Walko, will feature soloists Jennifer Paulino (soprano), Twila Ehmcke (mezzo-soprano), Michael Desnoyers (tenor), and Sergey Khalikulov (bass), along with a full orchestra, featuring strings from the San Francisco Academy of Music.
