With a gracious bow to nobility, The Monterey Symphony’s third concert is emotional, patriotic, and elegant. The musical selection is diverse, radiating an admirable ethnicity and the nationalistic passion of the composers. Joaquin Achúcarro, has been described as “one of the greats” by the media in Madrid, and will be showcasing his talents with Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. This highly decorated artist was presented with his country’s highest honor in 2003, when King Juan Carlos of Spain presented him with the Great Cross of Civil Merit, honoring his lifetime achievements. Jiménez’ playful and spirited Prelude to La Boda de Luis Alonso opens the concert with Spanish flair. Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini remains among the composer’s most passionate and elegant works, and Dvo?ák’s ambitious tribute to his Czech heritage in Symphony No. 7 in D Minor, round out an evening of glorious classical music.
