This evening is a celebration of the release of a new collection of songs by Bay Area singer-songwriter Mokai.
For this special performance, Mokai recreates his latest album of songs with the players who recorded them. An eclectic evening of excellent musicianship and inspired songwriting, with rhythmic folk, spirited folk-blues and moving ballads showcasing Mokai's lyrics, vocals and roots-Americana guitar style.
Arriving on the West Coast in the ‘80’s, Mokai fell in with the San Francisco songwriter community. He became a regular at haunts like the Bazaar Café and was called “…one of the more original players on the Bay Area acoustic music circuit,” by Acoustic Guitar magazine.
On his third studio album, Mokai enlists the support of well-known Bay Area musician, James Nash (Waybacks). Nash produced the album with a roster of well-loved local players. Nash, who Guitar Player called one of "50 Transcendent Acoustic Guitarists," adds harmony vocals and solo work on acoustic and electric guitar, slide and mandolin.
In a special appearance, keyboardist Julie Wolf (Indigo Girls, Ani DiFranco) performs on piano, Hammond B3 and accordion. Wolf is a local treasure, a nationally touring musician and producer who has supported the work of many local musicians.
Bassist Joe Kyle Jr. (Waybacks, Howell Devine) is an in-demand player known for his superb feel. Joe has shared the stage with a host of notable roots music heroes.
Special appearances by more local favorites TBA.
