Backstock Gallery is pleased to announce “modest process. irregular atmosphere considered.”, a group show inspired by the ideas of Sophie Taeuber-Arp and featuring works by Joseph Ferriso, Jonathan Anzalone, Faye Kendall, Sophie Leininger and Daren Wilson.
Sophie Taeuber-Arp is regarded as one of the most influential European artists of the Concrete Art movement making significant contributions to the development of modern art with her inspired and passionate works. A master craftswoman, she utilized her knowledge of craft to bring her ideas to fruition. Taueber-Arp made intricate costumes to wear during her dance performances, beaded jewelry, textiles, flatware and paintings that all reflected her understanding of color and balance. Taeuber-Arp believed that everything was art therefore making everything art.
The artists in this exhibition reflect a similar ethos, working within a variety of mediums to output their creative vision.
Joseph Ferriso and Jonathan Anzalone collaborate to make furniture and lighting with reclaimed materials that is strongly influenced by their understanding of painting, abstraction, color and symmetry.
Faye Kendall works with sculpture, textiles, installation, painting and drawing to investigate time spent in the natural world. Collecting and archiving organic materials, her feathers, driftwood, rocks and shells become chimes: hanging mobile like structures that reflect and draw attention to the world around us.
Working with painting and installation, Sophie Leininger investigates her interests in traditional textiles. Transforming a space, Leininger encourages the viewer to tap into their emotions more intimately, creating an environment of calm and reflection.
Inspired by the repetitious nature of Giorgio Morandi’s still life, Daren Wilson uses ceramics and painting to investigate his interest in the repeated form. Casting the same shape over and over again becomes a meditative process on comfort and simplicity.
Coming together in the form of two installations, the works in this exhibition invite us to become introspective, to reflect on the world around us, to feel joie de vivre and to appreciate the many view points of the art object.
