Pop music relies on risktakers for progression. The culture itself advances when artists push the envelope and defy categorization. When the multiplatinum duo of Malcolm Kelley and Tony Oller get together, they blur the lines between pop and R&B with timeless charisma, effusive confidence, and an enviable level of swagger. Returning from a two-year hiatus in 2018, the duo flip the script once again…“This time around, we decided to really take some risks,” says Tony. “Malcolm and I are doing exactly what we want to do and having a blast. I do believe in fate, and I always felt like this was destined. This is what we dreamed about. There’s an energy between us that we never found anywhere else. We’re so excited to be back.”“The timing was just right,” adds Malcolm. “We’d been talking about it ever since we went on the break, but this was the moment. We had the records ready. We wanted to deliver for the fans who had been waiting.”MKTO certainly gave audiences a worthwhile reason to wait. After becoming best friends on the set of Gigantic, the pair initially took pop by storm in 2014. Their breakout single “Classic” reached #8 on the Billboard Top 40 chart, earned a double-platinum plaque from the RIAA, and transformed into a worldwide sensation with platinum and gold certifications in Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, United Kingdom, and Denmark. Meanwhile, MKTO’s self-titled full-length debut yielded other favorites such as “Thank You,” “God Only Knows,” and “American Dream.”Between selling out headline dates on three continents and supporting Demi Lovato in arenas, they performed for the First Family at the 2015 White House Easter Egg Roll—another major milestone. They also performed on The Late Late Show with James Corden and Good Morning America in addition to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Plus, Taylor Swift invited them on stage to duet on “Classic” during a sold out tour stop in Boston. Following this whirlwind, 2016 saw them commence a much-needed break. Heading home, Tony spent quality time back in Houston with his family as Malcolm joined the cast of the critically acclaimed Detroit from Academy® Award-winning director Kathryn Bigelow. In early 2018, the guys hit the studio again with longtime collaborators Emanuel “Eman” Kiriakou [Selena Gomez, Ne-Yo] and Evan “Kidd” Bogart [Beyonce, Rihanna], who co-wrote and produced all of the previous MKTO release and will once again be at the helm of the new project being released through their label Crooked Paintings, distributed through BMG. Now, MKTO introduce their next chapter with “How Can I Forget.” Driven by a bright guitar melody and finger-snaps, the track unpredictably swings from vivid verse lines like “you wore that white sundress, smoked a clove cigarette…coulda looked at you all night long” into a sweeping and soaring chant that rings out.Malcolm goes on, “It’s about this one girl you can’t forget. You may have broken up a couple years before, but you go to the same spots and they remind you of her. You might even actually get back together, because you keep seeing her everywhere.”“Especially since you’ve got her name tattooed on your hand,” laughs Tony. For as strong as the music is, the bond between Malcolm and Tony has ultimately become even stronger.“We put a lot into this as both friends and musicians,” Malcolm concludes. “We hope everybody gets to enjoy it.”“We’re still the same two best friends who dreamed of getting on stage together,” Tony leaves off. “We’ve grown so much. We got the chance to reflect on everything, and it means so much. We stay true to ourselves. We’re going to ride this for a long while.”
