Mithila Painting Exhibition: 26 April - 18 July, 2014
Exhibition Lecture: Saturday, 26 April 2014 at 3PM. Limited Seating; Ticket $15/person, available at http://societyforasianart.org/node/141

Women in the Mithila region of Bihar have painted gods, goddesses and icons of
fertility on the walls of their homes, for generations. In the late 1960's they began
transferring their paintings to paper. Since then they have dramatically expanded the
subjects of their paintings. This exhibition will provide an introduction to the Mithila
painting tradition.

These paintings also serve an important spiritual function, to create an auspicious
and protective setting for the family's rituals. The exhibition focuses on
representations of deities, mythical stories, and the marriage rituals, which have
provided inspiration to the Mithila painters. It also features several frequently
represented deities, like Durga, Kali, Krishna, and Ardhanarishwara.

A slide lecture is scheduled on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at 3PM at the Gallery. There
is limited seating availability. Tickets are $15/person and can be purchased at the
Society for Asian Art website (www.societyforasianart.org/node/141)
