Mission Legends: The Art of Robles, Rios, & Roman

SEE EVENT DETAILS
It was 1992 in the Mission district of San Francisco and three artists were already well on their way to legendary status. Calixto Robles had recently took over for Rene Castro as the head of Mission Graffica, Michael Rios had already formed a strong bond with Carlos Santana after debuting his mural on 22nd street in the late 80’s and was producing work to critical acclaim, and Michael Roman had just landed in San Francisco after being re-located by Santana. All three were in demand, and extremely popular.

Roman’s stencils of Mezzo-American and African American iconography were everywhere showing his popular themes of Frida, Che’, Louis Armstrong, and John Coltrane, incorporating Aztec Gods and designs.

In just a few years Rios’ artwork would grace the cover of Santana’s “Supernatural” an image that 27 million people around the world have in their music collection today! He would then move to design all the set-work associated with the tour that accompanied the cd.

Robles also formed a relationship and bond with Santana where he introduced Robles to East Asian deities and symbols of peace that Calixto would soon start featuring in his work. All the while continuing his printmaking and original works in his signature Oaxacan style.

These three gentlemen can easily define the Mission and its cultural heritage. Their work is filled with nostalgia and inspiration. We are honored to feature Calixto Robles, Michael Rios, and posthumously Michael Roman. The works will be on display in our Valencia Street Gallery and our Mission Bay location from April 26 – May 26, 2019. Please make time to join us for an Opening Reception on Valencia St, April 27, 2019, from 6- 9 p.m.
