Southern Exposure is proud to present Mirror Material. Southern Exposure's 31st Annual Juried Exhibition, curated by Tiger Strikes Asteroid, celebrates hybridity--of materials and identities. Selected from over 300 entries submitted by artists from across the Bay Area, the fifteen artists chosen by members of the collective Tiger Strikes Asteroid push against strict categories of media and identity to playfully explore what it means to inhabit multiplicity. The artists in this show combine both literal and figurative material in ways that create new and surprising combinations. The works are a reflection of the diverse cultural, historical, and personal influences that inform our constantly adapting sense of self.
The exhibition will be on view from October 22 to November 19, 2022. We will celebrate its launch with an opening reception on October 22 at 6 PM at Southern Exposure.
The Juried Show's free-to-enter call for entries exemplifies Southern Exposure's artist-centered mission, our commitment to accessibility, and to supporting new, innovative, risk-taking contemporary visual art practices.
"Southern Exposure's juried exhibition has presented exciting new work by emerging artists for over 30 years now. This year, we received the same number of artist submissions that we received in the previous four years combined, and the jurors from Tiger Strikes Asteroid have created a cohesive exhibition of 20 pieces all centered on materiality and unique approaches to craft. TSA's artist-centered approach mirrors the mission of Southern Exposure and we are so thrilled to partner with them and to present this exciting exhibition." - Valerie Imus, Artistic & Co-Director
