Migrant Pickers, Essence (closing), Lily Holbrook

SEE EVENT DETAILS

Migrant Pickers

"If Joe Strummer had come up in Greenwich Village taking guitar lessons from Dave Van Ronk and crate digging for Rev. Gary Davis records, he might sound something like Gary Adler. Acoustic finger-picking guitar with a punk rock edge, Gary's music combines technical virtuosity with honest, soulful songwriting. Firmly rooted in the subversive tradition of American folk, Gary's performances are an unapologetic act of defiance-- of genre, expectation, and the very laws of physics. It's rock and roll, man, and it's good."

Migrant Pickers:
Gary Adler - guitar, vox, songs
Elliott Shannonhouse - guitar
Cole Bailey - drums
Jay Chavez - bass

Essence (closing)

“…layer upon layer or aural sensations (part acoustic, part electronic) just waiting to be discovered and savored. With nods to female contemporaries like Nelly Furtado, Gwen Stefani, Alanis Morissette, Imogen Heap, and Sarah McLachlan, essence remains very much her own artist. …a singer, who, like Madonna, isn’t afraid to take musical chances.” -Michael Paoletta, Billboard Magazine

Born in San Francisco, essence’s parents were quintessential flower children of the Haight Ashbury culture. A sixth generation native San Franciscan, her name “essence” (her real name) was inspired by her mother’s dream in which her unborn daughter introduced herself as essence. In later years, her family moved extensively both domestically and internationally while instilling a deep love of art and music. Essence studied theater at the American Conservatory and Speech Communications and Creative Writing at San Francisco State University while working her way through school as an artist model.

Lily Holbrook

~~~Lily Holbrook’s sweetly provocative voice snags your soul from the first strains of "Welcome To the Slaughter." Like a more sultry Tori Amos, with a touch of gruff vibrato ala Stevie Nicks, Lily is like a tortured angel trying to keep aloft. Her attempts create music that is stunningly beautiful and often brutally poignant with the lyrical content. The intensity she creates through mostly mellow music is mesmerizing. -Mark Waterbury, Music Morsels~~~
For years fans of Boston born singer/songwriter Lily Holbrook all had one thing in common…a subway token! Lily was a regular fixture inside the Park Street Subway Station, performing to ever increasing enthusiastic crowds of commuters.
Describing her music as melancholic rock, Lily’s influences have always been diverse, ranging from Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd to Tori Amos, PJ Harvey and The Cure. Of her latest album the artist says “This is my most accomplished work and fully represents who I am as an artist.” As legendary producer Glen Ballard (Alanis Morisette, No Doubt, Michael Jackson) says: “Lily Holbrook is the real deal!”
Lily now calls San Francisco her home and has begun working on her fourth album. Her passion for causes such as LGBTQI rights, animal welfare, at risk youth and women’s issues has her donating her musical talents to various charitable organizations throughout the bay area. She continues to busk and delight fans, locals and tourists with her impromtu concerts.
