Broadway actor, singer, and director Mike Wartella brings his band to the Firehouse Arts Center in Pleasanton for a concert on Saturday, April 21, at 8:00 p.m. Well known for his portrayal of Boq on Broadway and the National Tour of "Wicked," Wartella also finds time to perform with his band at venues like, most recently, NYC's Studio 54.
As a triple-threat talent, Mike Wartella has an impressive list of national and regional credits. He notably originated his most recent Broadway role of the wacky Mike Teavee in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," which just ended its run in in New York in January this year.
Before playing Boq, the Munchkin torn between Glinda and Nessarose in Broadway's "Wicked," Wartella appeared off-Broadway in "Rent" at New World Stages, and in regional runs of "Seussical," "A Prayer for Owen Meany," "Chasing Rainbows," "Oliver Twist" and "A Christmas Carol" to name a few of his favorite productions. His film and TV work includes: Blood Night, "Mysteries of Laura," Loving Leah.
Mike says the theater bug first bit when he was seven years old: "...I saw "Rocky Horror [Picture Show]" for the first time. I asked my mother if I could dress up like Frank-N-Furter for a party, and there I was in my fishnets and high heels and pearls, having a great time. My parents (clearly) knew from a young age that I was going to be an actor."
He got his first taste of theater training in Circle in the Square Theatre School, which is literally right next door to "Wicked." "It took a lot of work and determination to get there," he notes with a smile. "It took me 10 years to go 10 feet!"
