Merritt's African American Studies Department has created the Africana Studies Community Research Center as a means to immerse students, educators and the community in the knowledge of African & African-American history.
Launched in 2015, the Africana Center is the county's first of its kind at the community college level. The state-of-the-art Africana Center features historically rich content compiled from a myriad of resources and a custom written curriculum.
The interactive curriculum consists of 160 pages of content under four topics: Classical African Civilizations; Maafa: Slavery and Colonialism; Pan Africanism and Oakland: Our Story.
