Mercury Soul's "Burlesque & Beats" is a gorgeous, multimedia-infused concert, stylishly and fluidly uniting the worlds of classical music and EDM/electronica with elements of the 1920s French underground music and culture, including burlesque, cabaret, and vaudeville.
The program will feature classical works performed by the musicians of Classical Revolution, including Darius Milhaud’s surrealist ballet, Le Boeuf sur le Toit (The Ox on the Roof), named after the Parisian cabaret bar where it was premiered in 1920; Kurt Weill’s Kleine Dreigroschenmusik, an instrumental suite he wrote based on the legendary Three Penny Opera; 3 MOB Pieces by living composer HK Gruber (greatly inspired by Weill); and two pieces by Jean Françaix: Le Gay Paris, and L’Heure du Berger, the latter of which consists of character sketches of Parisian café culture.
Additionally, guitarist freddy clarke and the Campfire Quartet will perform gypsy cabaret tunes, and Burlesque performer Lula Applebruise will perform to one of the classical’s sauciest arias: “Habañera” from Carmen. The evening will also feature the extraordinary talents of aerialist and violinist Shaina K. Evoniuk and aerialist Micah Walters, with French house and beyond being spun by DJ Masonic (Mason Bates), DJ Justin Reed, and DJ Nate Manic.
The show will connect classical music, cabaret, and modern club culture with electro-acoustic interludes composed specifically for the show by acclaimed Bay Area composer/DJ Mason Bates. These “mercury interludes” are the moments when DJs and classical musicians come together to bridge the gap between new and old, cutting-edge and traditional.
