Merce Cunningham at 100 – Past and Present

In participion with Merce Cunningham’s centenary celebration, Dance Film SF (presenter of San Francisco Dance Film Festival) presents a special event  screening of two groundbreaking films that represent Cunningham’s Past and Present.
The PAST program at 2 p.m. screens the film Assemblage featuring the Cunningham company performing throughout Ghirardelli Square in 1968 with an independent score by John Cage. Followed by a panel discussion with Margaret Jenkins, Karen Attix, Charles Moulton, Bill Yahraus (Assemblage editor) and moderated by dance critic and journalist, Claudia Bauer.
The PRESENT program at 5:00 p.m. screens the 87-minute documentary, If the Dancer Dances (2018). Viewers are invited into the intimate world of the dance studio, where three former members of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company teach Cunningham's 1968 RainForest to the Stephen Petronio Company.
Hope Mohr, Artistic Director of The Bridge Project, will discuss Signals from the West: Bay Area Artists in Conversation with Merce Cunningham at 100, a collaboration among the Merce Cunningham Trust, HMD, ODC, and SFMOMA’s Open Space.
