Memories to Light: Never Brighter

SEE EVENT DETAILS
McEvoy Arts presents Danny Clay and Theresa Wong for the premiere performance of their original score for 'Memories to Light: Never Brighter,' a film collage of Asian American home movies directed and edited by Chester Canlas and Antonio Remington. Tickets, on sale now, range from $12 to $15.

Commissioned by the Center for Asian American Media (CAAM) and McEvoy Arts, this hour-long live program includes the film screening with live music, composed and performed by Clay and Wong. It takes place in McEvoy Arts' intimate gallery setting to a limited audience. 'Memories to Light: Never Brighter' is a panoramic juxtaposition of vintage and modern images and sound that show the warmth and vigor of Asian American lives and stories.

'Memories to Light' is also an ongoing initiative of the Center for Asian American Media (CAAM) to preserve and present Asian American 8mm and 16mm home movies from the 1960s onwards. The initiative seeks to counter stereotypical depictions of Asian characters in the media by sharing authentic scenes of Asian American family life. For this commission, CAAM invited documentary filmmaker Canlas and archist Remington to interweave the simple joys of everyday moments found in the CAAM home movie archive with images and clips from the archives of the Manilatown Heritage Foundation. The result is a film stitched together into a shimmering palimpsest of Asian American experience and diaspora.

'Memories to Light: Never Brighter' marks the closing day of 'Next to You,' the exhibit at McEvoy Arts celebrating the resilience of the performance events. The event is co-produced by the Center for Asian American Media and McEvoy Foundation for the Arts, with the Manilatown Heritage Foundation.

$12-15.
