Originator of the Viewpoints technique, Mary Overlie, releases ‘Standing In Space: The Six Viewpoints Theory & Practice Manual’ Launch party scheduled for November 6.
SAN FRANCISCO – Drawing from her lifetime work of integrating her Viewpoints technique in the evolving worlds of dance and theatre, the well-known Viewpoints originator, Mary Overlie is celebrating the release of her anticipated new book, “Standing In Space: The Six Viewpoints Theory & Practice manual” with a launch party on November 6. It will follow a two-day workshop featuring the author at foolsFury in San Francisco.
Mary Overlie created the Six Viewpoints as an answer to the question "What are dance and theater made of?" She sought out a technical language to discuss the artistic forms similar to that of the specific language used to describe painting. What followed was the development of a comprehensive language that simultaneously uncovered a philosophical depth to performance when deconstructed.
The seed of the entire work of The Six Viewpoints is found in the simple act of standing in space. From this perspective the artist is invited to read and be educated by the lexicon of daily experience. The information of space, the experience of time, the familiarity of shapes, the qualities and rules of kinetics in movement, the ways of logics, that stories are formed and the states of being and emotional exchanges that constitute the process of communication between living creature. These are the six materials named in The Six Viewpoints that constitute basic deconstructed theater. Working directly with these materials the artist begins to learn of performance through the essential languages as an independent intelligence.
The launch party is from 5 - 7p.m. on November 6 at the foolsFury Theatre. Overlie will present a short speech, a special performance, and sign copies of her new book. Complimentary hors d’oeuvres and wine will be served. Exclusive Viewpoints merchandise including the book, t-shirts, and Haiku Recipes will be available for purchase.
Mary Overlie conceived Movement Research, a cooperative dance organization of international renown; founded Danspace Project with Barbara Dilley, a dance presenting organization in New York City; she was the first teacher hired to establish the Experimental Theatre Wing at Tisch School of the Arts at New York University; Overlie is a choreographer and performer with an international reputation in the field of experimental dance, for many years teaching and performing as a part of the International Tanz Wochen, working with Ismael Ivo and Karl Regensburger in Vienna. Recently retired after 39 years teaching in the Undergraduate Drama Department at NYU, she now resides in Bozeman, Montana.
