MARTIN LUTHER THE REAL MCCOY

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Cherished Bay Area vocalist and SFJAZZ Collective alumnus Martin Luther McCoy presents his salute to the music of singer, poet, author, and activist Gil Scott-Heron with special guest saxophonist and SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director Howard Wiley, keyboardist Kev Choice and longtime Scott-Heron collaborator Brian Jackson.

Rising to international attention for his work with The Roots, Cody ChesnuTT, Dave Matthews, Jill Scott, DJ Jazzy Jeff and Zion I, McCoy is perhaps best known for his on-screen role in the Oscar-nominated 2007 Beatles tribute film Across the Universe. He was a vital part of the SFJAZZ Collective's 2019 salutes to Miles Davis' In a Silent Way and Sly Stone's Stand! and 2021's program devoted to music reflecting the moment.

Named "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" for Scott-Heron's epochal song and phrase, this special program delves into the late artist's richly rewarding and timelessly relevant songbook that blended jazz, R&B, street poetry, and social consciousness and inspired generations of jazz, soul, and hip-hop musicians.

Working as a musical partner to Scott-Heron on his first two landmark albums and co-credited with him on a string of spiritually charged releases into the late 1970s, Jackson is a living legend of popular culture.

Keyboardist and producer Kev Choice is a kindred spirit, mixing jazz and hip-hop with a master's touch.
