SEE EVENT DETAILS
GRADUATE LECTURE SERIESMargo Machida: Pacific Bodies Reimaged
Confronting a spectrum of social, cultural, and historical issues, Pacific Bodies Reimaged foregrounds work by contemporary Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and US Pacific Islander artists for whom the body provides a primary locus for expressive and critical intervention. In closely tying together individual and collective experience via trans-Pacific themes linking maritime Asia, Oceania, the Americas, and beyond, their projects function as animate signs and metaphors of human presence and physical engagement in the world.
Margo Machida, Ph.D. is Professor Emerita of Art History and Asian American Studies at the University of Connecticut. Born and raised in Hawai‘i, she is a scholar, independent curator, and cultural critic specializing in Asian American art and visual culture. She is the author of the award-winning book, Unsettled Visions: Contemporary Asian American Artists and the Social Imaginary (Duke University Press, 2009) and Associate Editor for Asian Diasporic Visual Cultures and the Americas journal (Brill).
