Making Overtures

SEE EVENT DETAILS
The Contra Costa Chamber Orchestra will present Making Overtures, the opening concert of their 2017-18 season, at 2:00pm on Saturday, October 7, at the El Campanile Theater in Antioch. The program showcases overtures in a wide variety of musical styles from late 18th century works by Gluck and Mozart, to early 19th century works by Beethoven, Rossini, and Schubert. They will also present works from the mid-late 1800's by Glinka and Offenbach, and a modern overture by young Spanish film composer Oscar Navarro.

Most of the overtures on the concert program have become popular favorites in the classical music world - including Marriage of Figaro (Mozart), La Gazza Ladra-The Thieving Magpie (Rossini), Egmont (Beethoven), Rosamunde (Schubert), Ruslan and Ludmilla (Glinka), and La Belle Helene (Offenbach).

The Contra Costa Chamber Orchestra, under the leadership of Timothy M. Smith, is comprised of 50 musicians ranging in age from 16-85 and was one of the inaugural groups to perform as a chamber orchestra in Contra Costa County. The orchestra is nearly forty years old, and its purpose is to provide cultural enrichment, education, and entertainment to the community. Timothy Smith, the group's conductor and music director, is a long-time music educator and will provide insights about the composers and their works during the program.
