Main Characters brings together a cast of sculptural protagonists, each with a story embedded in its form, surface, and presence. It all unfolds under the banner of Main Characters, inviting you to revel in these clay protagonists-each an intriguing glimpse into the narratives of the artists, our program, and something else left unsaid baked into the medium.
With a new kiln in action and a powerhouse of ceramic teaching artists joining CE in 2024, we're at the perfect moment to showcase the depth and range of our collection. This exhibition unveils a treasure trove of ceramic works-many shown for the first time-offering a fresh look at the expressive potential of the medium and fresh perspective our CE artists bring to the medium.
From commanding busts and wall-mounted heads to a magical oceanic fish, surreal trains with bonnets, dinosaur eggs, and a four-headed dragon, these sculptures are full of unspoken personality, humor, and wonder. This collection pushes beyond representation into something more animated, more alive. A ceramic puppet caught mid-performance, a train that seems to stare right back at you-each piece has humor, mystery, and personality, waiting for guests to step in and connect the dots.
