Collaborating for the first time Mads Tolling and Kim Nalley will explore the universe of jazz, R&B and Tolling originals. Joining them are:
Colin Hogan – piano
Sam Bevan – bass
Eric Garland – drums
This is a show with two of the Bay Area’s most celebrated jazz artists and not to be missed.
Mads Tolling is an internationally renowned violinist, violist, and composer originally from Copenhagen, Denmark. As a former member for over eight years with the pioneering string group, Turtle Island Quartet, Mads has received two Grammy Awards. He regularly tours with acclaimed bassist Stanley Clarke, and he was featured on Stanley’s album, “Toys of Men.”
Since 2007 Mads has lead his own group, Mads Tolling Quartet. His recording, “The Playmaker” released in the fall of 2009, features Stanley Clarke and jazz greats Russell Ferrante & Stefon Harris. Mads’ latest album with his quartet, “Celebrating Jean-Luc Ponty – Live at Yoshi’s” came out in the spring of 2012. Mads has been featured on NPR’s Morning Edition and his recordings have received rave reviews in Downbeat Magazine, Strings Magazine, Washington Post & San Francisco Chronicle. Mads has performed with Chick Corea, Ramsey Lewis, Kenny Barron Leo Kottke & Paquito D’Rivera.
Mads’ long list of highlights include playing at the Hollywood Bowl, Library of Congress, Monterey Jazz Festival, Newport Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival and at the Danish Embassy in Washington DC for the Danish Crown Prince and Princess.
Awarded "Most Influential African American in the Bay Area" in 2005 and "Best Jazz Group" in 2013, vocalist Kim Nalley is already being called "legendary" and "San Francisco institution." No trip to San Francisco is complete without seeing Kim Nalley perform. With an international reputation as one of world's best jazz & blues vocalists, she has graced concert halls from Moscow to Lincoln Center. A true Renaissance woman, Kim Nalley has also been a featured writer for JazzWest and SF Chronicle's City Brights, shortlisted for a Grammy nomination, a produced playwright, a former jazz club owner, an accomplished stage actress, a history academic, and an avid lindy hop & blues dancer. Her many philanthropic endeavors include founding the Kim Nalley Black Youth Jazz Scholarship.
