The Mack Avenue SuperBand, an all-star special event originating at the annual Detroit Jazz Festival, is now touring nationally. Initiated in 2012 by the Mack Avenue record label, the fourth edition of the SuperBand features tenor saxophonist Kirk Whalum and alto saxophonist Tia Fuller, backed by an exquisite rhythm section of pianist Christian Sands, bassist Christian McBride, and drummer Carl Allen. McBride, an award-winning bassist/multi-instrumentalist, is also this year’s musical director. Kirk Whalum’s soulful tenor saxophone and Tia Fuller’s inventive alto solos make for a high energy frontline. Christian Sands, one of today’s top young pianists, is a member of the Christian McBride Trio and Inside Straight. Drummer Carl Allen, a much-heralded veteran sideman, has supplied the rhythmic drive for the SuperBand since its inception. Be sure to catch them this time around, because as McBride notes, “These bands change a little bit every year and we already know that this is not going to be a permanent group, so we just want to have as much fun as we can while we’re together.” The most recent Mack Avenue SuperBand release is Live From The Detroit Jazz Festival–2015.
