Lumière is a series of candelabra sculptures by Ariel Bowman that celebrate different people who contributed to the fields of natural history during the Age of Enlightenment through the Age of Wonder. This is the period of the mid seventeenth to late eighteenth centuries in which there were great developments in science and philosophy across Europe. Each sculpture represents a different scientist, explorer, naturalist, or theorist whose works first expanded the human relationship to nature. Though these figures contributed greatly to our understanding of the natural world, they are but candles in the dark, and there is still much left for us to discover.
