Four artists tell their story of living and working in Santa Cruz through their art form and the influences of earning a living to make art. Aaron Clarke, Carlos Dye, DavidGardner, and Peter Saporito walk you through their town using four distinctstyles and an incredibly vibrant palate. While their work styles and materials are vastly different, the feeling "home" or "town" or "daily life" becomes a common theme for all four working artists. "Livin" could be another example of "practice makes perfect" or "tenacity pays off." Either way, the day job clearly influences the art for each one of these prolific and sharp makers. On the off hours, each artist picks up the brush or camera and creates work beyond the industry. Artist reception is Friday, August 29, 6:00-9:00pm featuring DJRS2 Ray Stevens.

As owner of Broprints, Aaron Clark's work is technical, innovative, and fresh. Although the printmaking process on ceramic is new, Clark's knowledge of the medium and refined skill set make a complicated and technical process appear profoundly simple. He combines landscape with the mechanical to tell a tender narrative about place. As one of the most recognizable "character-makers" in town, David Gardner continues this line of work in "Livin" with the addition of super-sizing everyone. They are big in scale and personality. Gardner's cutout wood paintings are people we see everyday, captured in a moment of bliss or blaze. The characters offer a commentary of the local scene. Gardner states it best: "Consider it folk art and I like these folks."

Carlos Dye is one of the most technically savvy artists in the ceramic industry. He has worked in the industry for over 15 years and taken that knowledge to his own studio. His work has edge and life, nostalgia and the occasional naughty. The series created for "Livin" showcases his eye for the advertising graphic combined with iconic ceramic sculptures. Pete Saporito's images are crowd favorites. They capture the raw, grime, and moments of intensity. The scale of Saporito's polaroid transfers and black and white prints are intimate, yet reveal something the whole world suspected. Years of photojournalism in the local music scene and editorial stories shared with Saporito's affinity of handcrafted frames in glass and re-claimed wood classify these images as real art photography.
