A Professor Emeritus of American Studies at UC Santa Cruz, John Dizikes served as Cowell College provost and is a recipient of the UCSC Alumni Association's Distinguished Teaching Award. He is the author of numerous articles and four books, and is the winner of the 1993 National Book Critics Circle Award for Opera in America: A Cultural History. An award bearing his name is presented each year to deserving faculty in the UCSC humanities department.
