A New Yorker who spent his teenage years in Puerto Rico, Manny Martinez is a powerhouse vocalist who’s played a central role on the Bay Area alternative music scene for three decades. He’s best known in some circles for his work as frontman for the alt-rock band Psychefunkapus. For rock en español fans he’s indelibly linked to the alt-Latin combo Los Mocosos, while others think of Martinez as a top-notch salsero via Mazacote, John Santos, and Jesus Diaz. La Rebeldia brings Martinez’s various passions under one roof, combining funk, salsa, hip-hop, politics, literature and education. Collaborating with eight-time Grammy-nominated producer Greg Landau, the band released its debut EP Identidad Profunda (Deep Identity) last year, announcing Martinez’s arrival as a bandleader in his own right.
