Left Coast Chamber Ensemble presents House of the Beehives

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Left Coast Chamber Ensemble presents House of the Beehives, a concert featuring the West Coast premiere of the 2016 LCCE Composition Contest winning piece by Melody Eötvös, inspired by the Italo Calvino story of the same name. The program includes duos by Ravel and Bogdanovic, with Sebastian Currier’s sextet Broken Consorts, along with a new work by David Coll.

Inspired by Italo Calvino's story, Eötvös’ vibrant work explores several different facets of this fascinating yet grisly tale. “I’ve grouped the tale into four thematic areas, the first of which returns at the end, full circle,"explains Eötvös. "The result is a prickly, pagan-esk unfolding that begins with the opening chorale theme, and slowly sinks into an uncertain world that wavers somewhere in between the lost and the found --- unmasking the central character as an alienated but profoundly content human being.”

In addition to Eötvös’ new work, this program features Broken Consort by the American composer Sebastian Currier. “Scored for two guitars, oboe, flute, violin, and cello this a gorgeous work that moves from order to chaos, and back,” comments Anna Presler, LCCE Artistic Director. “I think Currier is one of the finest composers writing today, and I am so pleased to offer his music here in the Bay Area." Left Coast will also premiere a new work from David Coll for the same combination of instruments, as well as music of Ravel and Bogdanovic.
