Left Coast Chamber Ensemble’s 25th anniversary season comes to a celebratory close with A Rare Serenade, featuring Schoenberg’s Serenade Op. 24. Scored for guitar, mandolin, two clarinets, strings, and baritone, this rarely performed piece is brilliant and expressive. Infusing the light-hearted serenade form with a modern piquant flavor, this serenade exploits the talents of the impressive Left Coast Chamber Ensemble players and talented guest performers from the Bay Area and beyond. Longtime LCCE members Anna Presler (violin), Phyllis Kamrin (viola) and Leighton Fong (cello), along with guest Dana Rath (mandolin) make up the string section. Left Coast’s clarinetist Jerome Simas is joined by guest artist Jeff Anderle as bass clarinet, with Left Coast’s Michael Goldberg on guitar and guest baritone Josh Quinn.
A concert of serenades traditionally ushers in long summer evenings. In keeping with that tradition, LCCE’s spring concert also features a serenade by Schoenberg’s student Sándor Jemnitz and a world premiere by Bay Area composer Nicolas Lell Benavides.
Benavides’ new piece, Serenade for Small Ensemble, is composed for Left Coast Chamber Ensemble members Anna Presler (violin), Phyllis Kamrin (viola), Leighton Fong (cello), and Michael Goldberg (guitar).
