Lecture by Will Roger on his new book Compass of the Ephemeral at Burning Man Headquarters

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Photographer, author and cultural co-founder of Burning Man Will Roger will be hosting a free lecture on his new book: Compass of the Ephemera: Aerial Photography of Black Rock City through the Lens of Will Roger, on November 20, 2019. The talk will take place at the Burning Man Headquarters in San Francisco, 660 Alabama St, CA 94110, from 6pm-9pm and is open to the public.

The evening will celebrate Burning Man, giving audience members the opportunity to learn about Roger's creative process, hear passages from the book and meet fellow Burning Man enthusiasts. Guests will be invited to meet Will Roger and have books signed by the author. Opening remarks will be made by Roger and MC Stuart Mangrum, a pioneer settler of Black Rock City and Burning Man's first communications manager. This will be followed by a short film screening and a Q&A session which will be opened up to the audience.

Roger will discuss Burning Man's expansion over the years and how it has affected the event and the preparations that take place every year to make it into a reality. Guests will gain an inside perspective on Roger's long and thriving career within the Burning Man community as well as his first-hand experience in erecting the on-site structures in a matter of months year after year.

Compass of the Ephemeral was published in June 2019 by Smallworks Press. The in-depth photo book shows Roger's aerial and drone photography taken from the years 2005 - 2018 for the first time. The photographs chronicle the ever-changing cityscape and transformation of Black Rock City, home to Burning Man and one of the harshest continental climates in the continental U.S. The book traced the history and transition of Black Rock City from a few thousand people in the late 1990s to the growing metropolis that supports over 70,000 city.

As the first Director of Operations of the Burning Man event, Will Roger worked alongside the other five founding board members and all others involved to ensure that Black Rock City becomes a reality each year and then vanishes without a trace. He was instrumental in creating numerous foundations for the event, including: established the Department of Public Works (DPW), a workforce of volunteers dedicated to building and deconstructing the physical infrastructure of Black Rock City; actualized an FAA approved airport, and conceived traditions such as the Gold Spike Ceremony, a pre-event commemoration for the builders of Black Rock City, as the first stake is placed in the ground to survey and build the future city.

The lecture is free and open to the public. Copies of Compass of the Ephemeral will be available for purchase with signings by Will Roger.
